Bruce Nevison’s Story

Seventy-five and still racing

Bruce Nevison

On October 19th, Bruce Nevison marked his 8th year of participating in Our Hospital Walk/Run. Whether running, cross-country skiing or competing in triathlons, the seventy-five year old North Bay resident enjoys keeping active and knows the benefits it has for his health. Bruce was among 700 participants who helped raise over $110,000 at the 8th annual event at NBRHC. All proceeds from the Walk/Run stay local, benefiting your community’s greatest healthcare needs.

With a passion for sport, Bruce believes the Walk/Run is a great opportunity to exercise and support local healthcare. As Bruce points out, all funds raised help purchase medical equipment at your hospital. “I have always donated to the hospital, and I love competition, so Our Hospital Walk/Run is a natural fit,” he says.

This year Bruce received some bad news that nearly prevented him from lacing up – he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April of this year.

“The doctor discovered my PSA had risen quite sharply, so they did a biopsy. The score was not good,” recalls Bruce.

Thankfully, the Health Centre staff moved quickly. Bruce’s doctor got the results of his biopsy the following Thursday. The next day they discussed the next steps and booked an appointment with a specialist the following Monday.

Grateful for the staff acting so quickly, Bruce was able to receive the care he needed as soon as possible. “They were great!” Bruce says. “It was amazing because I was right on the borderline. Fortunately for me, my cancer had not spread!”

Still waiting the results of his radiation, Bruce was determined to participate in Our Hospital Walk/Run 8km race. Bruce showed up on race day with his laces tied ready to run again for his eighth time. He was glad to continue supporting the Foundation’s fundraising efforts for the hospitals greatest needs.

“It takes a lot to run a hospital, and because I was treated so well at the North Bay Regional Health Centre I feel it is important to contribute.”
