Have yourself a merry little Christmas

‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas.’

A song made popular by the likes of Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra.

I’m Shawna Roy from Callander and a mother of two girls.

As we approach the holiday season, this old familiar tune catches my attention.

Did you know the original lyrics in 1943 were quite different?

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
It may be your last.
Next year we may all be living in the past.

Sitting in my kitchen today watching my girls write their letters to Santa brings me back to our family Christmas two years ago, when this song’s sentiments reflected my situation.

A mere two days before Christmas I received devastating news.

I had Stage Two Breast Cancer.

I was 29. My girls were two and five at the time.

My family had a very different Christmas that year.

As I watched them open their presents I couldn’t help but think, “Will this be my last Christmas with my girls?”

Thanks to the care I received at my hospital, I now feel hopeful that I have many more Christmases to look forward to with my husband and my daughters – and one day with my grandchildren.

I’m thankful I only had to travel to Sudbury once for a consultation. All of my care was provided in North Bay.

After the holidays, I underwent a single mastectomy. At my oncologist’s recommendation, I proceeded with chemotherapy. Because of my young age they wanted to treat the cancer aggressively and give me the best chance of having many more Christmases.

This experience is why I’m asking you to make a donation this Christmas to the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation. Whatever the size of your gift, it will help purchase life-saving medical equipment to care for patients with cancer and other illnesses, close to home.

Cancer is hard enough. I can’t imagine having to coordinate extra care for my children while undergoing surgery and treatments, or travelling for hours when exhausted and drained. But that is the reality for many, especially those living in rural communities.

As a community it is so important that our hospital has the best medical equipment to care for us when we’re sick. You can take an active role today by making a donation.

I’ll leave you with this.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas.
Let your heart be light.
Next year all our troubles will be out of sight.

Thank you,

Shawna Roy

P.S. Please consider making a monthly commitment to our hospital. Your monthly gifts add up over time, helping to purchase urgently needed medical equipment.
